Tomorrow I’m going to parliament for a debate about reuniting refugee families.
Currently the UK’s laws on this are super strict, meaning refugees who have been separated from their families cannot be reunited unless they cross borders dangerously and illegally.
This includes refugee children, who currently are not allowed to bring their parents or siblings to join them in the UK. This makes the UK one of only two EU countries to deny refugee children the chance to grow up with their family around them…forcing them into care.
Family is important to all of us, but even more important when you have been through extreme pain and trauma.
How can you start a new life when you know your parents or siblings are still living in a war zone?
This bill could change all this.
WHAT THE BILL CALLS FOR:
– Child refugees in the UK to have the right to sponsor their close family so they can rebuild their lives together and help them integrate in their new community.
– AN expansion of who qualifies as family, so young people who have turned 18 and elderly parents can safely join their family in the UK.
– A reintroduction of legal aid so refugees can afford to navigate the complicated process of being reunited with their family.
I mean…who doesn’t want these things!
We need 100 MPs to vote in favour tomorrow. To help make this happen you can super easily send your MP a message via this link:
