Sami’s story reminds me of my own little foster brother’s. Also from Afghanistan, Sami left when he was 15, after his father and brother in law were murdered. It was his mother who made the heart-wrenching decision to send him away, as the only male left in the family…for his own safety. He had to say goodbye to his mum and two sisters, and hasn’t seen them since.
It took him 18 months to get to the UK, where he ended up living on the streets. Hungry and homeless, he met a lady called Ellie who took him into her home and her family, and became the only ‘mum’ he now has.
