Saifullah left his province in Afghanistan when the Taliban took over. His initial plan was to head to the UK, but along his journey he began to understand what getting to England would actually mean for him. What he would have to do to get there and the risks he would have to take to cross the channel. So now he has set his sights on Belgium.
Although there is no more water to cross, he still has lots of borders, controls, police, violence, smugglers and danger ahead of him to get there. But he has no choice but to keep moving forward…. Going back is not an option, and this is what staying where he is looks like.
Staying here is no life for anyone. Not even a dog should live like this. But Saifullah was sweet and positive. He said he was happy to meet volunteers who were there to help him and he trusted that things would work out for him.
Having that outlook on zero sleep, and little chance of getting much tonight in this place…to me, that is courage.
