This morning the captain of rescue ship Sea-Watch 3, Carola Rackete, defied the orders of the Italian government and sailed the ship and the 42 people it had rescued, into the harbour.
She was immediately arrested.
This came after days of waiting out at sea for Italian politicians to decide what should happen to those on board. One by one, the medical cases on board deteriorated and the situation got more desperate.
What was Carola supposed to do? Return them to Libya? In our view she is the only one here actually obeying the law. It is her duty as captain of this ship to first rescue people and then take them to a safe port.
She is now a political prisoner.
“I decided to enter the port of Lampedusa. I know what I’m risking, but the 42 survivors I have on board are exhausted. I’m taking them to safety.”
Carola we stand with you and support you with all our hearts.
Seawatch will be defending her through the courts. If you would like to support her: https://sea-watch.org/en/donate/
