This year’s Christmas Day walk gave me a chance to do some proper listening. I listened as Awad told me, whilst we looked down at our boots stepping through the mud, that it reminded him of his time living in the Jungle.
I listened to Mohamed as he took us on a detour to see the sheep in the next field, telling us that he hadn’t seen sheep since he left Sudan.
And I listened to Khaled as he used all of the new English words he has learnt so quickly since being here.
Sharing these small moments as we walked felt super healing. These moments may not be the cure for the pain or trauma of this year…but they feel like a step in the right direction.
Positive, loving, happy moments.
