Back To Syria

Friday. What’s on your mind?

For Shaala, it’s going back to Syria.

Shaala is 70 years old and from Hasakah, North Eastern Syria. She is chronically sick, coughing and finding it hard to breathe. She lives in a camp in Izmir, Turkey.

Life in a tent, sleeping in the mud, out in the cold, has led her to decide that she is better off going back to Syria.

Her brother is still there, or so she thinks…hopes.

We all hope Shaala doesn’t try to return to her dangerous homeland. But we can understand that at this time in her life, there’s a yearning to be home and in the comfort of what is known and familiar. And have some dignity.
