The End Of The Church

One of the last places to be demolished in the Jungle was the church.

The church was built by hand, with bits of wood, and stood proudly, even back at the very beginning, when there was little around it but greenery and tents.

The church remained a place of sanctuary, a symbol of hope and resilience, even when the community around it was destroyed back in March. Still it remained…a place of quiet and calm amidst the chaos.

The women walking to church in their white shawls and the singing during Sunday Service brought me so much hope…but then so did the fact that even the french bulldozer operators removed the crucifixes before dismantling the structure and didn’t destroy them.

This gesture of respect made me even more emotional to see this beautiful place fall to the ground.
