Saving Lives With Social Media

I recently gave a TED talk about Social Media, and it’s something I’ve been thinking about loads…

Social media is a funny one.

On the one hand I see so much beauty, little insights into everyday life, capturing the mundane and making it special…

On the other hand there a lot of bullshit on here. A lot of weight loss adverts and negative rants and looooads of ways to procrastinate by mindlessly scrolling through imagery and messages that aren’t particularly productive or positive. So many things to look at to take you out of the present moment you are actually living right NOW. And they affect your mood and the actions you take in your real life. I can see something on Facebook that affects my whole day. These messages that we’re all both putting out to the world, and taking into our subconscious are powerful. They create change within society.

That’s why it’s so important to be mindful of how we use this crazily powerful tool of our time!!

I feel super super strongly about using your voice through social media to make this world a better place. And I know it’s possible. You don’t need to be rich or famous to be influential any more, you have the tools to get your voice heard right at your fingertips. The platform to create change is in your hand right now.

If you can change perceptions, you can change the world.

What do you love? What do you believe in? What are you passionate about? What do you care about? Go there. Talk about that. Take little actions. Lead by example.

Whatever your financial / general situation, it doesn’t actually matter, you can tailor your actions to suit your own life. Everybody has the ability to give something. And I think most of us have the strong understanding that life is about more than just looking out for yourself. So find out what that something is for you, and everyone will benefit!

My TED talk is about the amazing movement of people who communally used social media to change the lives of the people living in the Jungle refugee camp in Calais, and many other refugee camps across Europe and the Middle East. You can watch it here:

Help make the world better in a way that works for you. Volunteer, donate, talk to people, even just share this post and the message that we are all powerful as individuals. Little things, little actions, together become huge….
