Devastating From Calais

DEVASTATING NEWS FROM CALAIS….

The camp is still recovering from the shocking evictions and bulldozing of the Southern side of the camp by the French authorities, just a few months ago…

And now…the worst news…

The Mayor of Calais, Natacha Bouchart has said that the eviction of the Northern side of the camp will be carried out ‘very soon’, and many of our friends in the camp are telling us they have been given warnings to move.

This is the news we have been dreading.

When the Southern side was demolished, shops, restaurants, shelters, homes and people moved to the now even more densely populated Northern side of the camp, as they were given no alternative.

I often close my eyes and think about the families frantically packing up their belongings as their homes were destroyed infront of them. I will never forget the pregnant woman who was beaten down from the roof of her shelter or the kids having tear gas washed from their eyes.

I still can’t believe this happened.
In my lifetime.
On my doorstep.

Surely it can’t happen again…

The latest census by our friends at Help Refugees counted 5270 people living in the Northern part of the camp, 425 of which are unaccompanied minors. After the last bulldozing, over 100 children went missing.

There will be a meeting with the prefecture tomorrow to try and gain more information about the future of the camp, and we will keep you updated as we hear.

We will continue to do everything we can to support our friends in the camp.
They will need this now more than ever.
