Mohammad: Update

A few days ago we shared the desperate situation of Mohammed, a Syrian refugee in Turkey who had been granted asylum in Brazil but exploited by his employer and left without the money he had worked so hard for to pay for his flight…

Our lovely pal Kelli set him up a fundraiser for his flight and before we knew it, not only did you guys cover the £450 he needed, but well over tripled it!!!!

I sat here watching the money going up and the comments pouring in, feeling the most overwhelming amount of emotion…

Once the target had been reached, Kelli and Mohamed had three days to get everything sorted…

The first day of the three, the banking system was down and they struggled to transfer the money so that Mohammed could use it, costing them valuable time…

The second day (yesterday), money in hand, Mohammed went to pay for his flight but was told (incorrectly) by the agency that he would have to pay a massive fine at the airport for overstaying.

Panicking, Mohammed didn’t buy it, worried he wouldn’t have enough money to pay the fine.

Mohammad’s friend Fares was also facing many problems throughout his process. Fares escaped Syria by being smuggled across the border into Turkey. This left him with no official exit stamp in his passport and he had no time to get the “temporary protection” status he needed to be able to travel further.

The rules in Turkey are not easy to understand for any foreigner, let alone the rules applying to refugees, so you can imagine the stress and confusion this created. We get stressed about visas etc for a HOLIDAY, imagine applying that to a life or death situation. The chance at freedom for you and your family…

Another friend, Hasan, was able to direct them to the relevant offices to finally get things sorted, and now, day three, and Mohammed is ready to go…

Visa…done.
Flight confirmation..received.
Permission to leave form…signed and ready to go.

My heart is bursting with happiness just writing this…

So…regarding the extra money…

Tonight Mohammed and Kelli spent their last evening together looking through Mohammed’s beautiful wedding photos. He is only recently married, but he left his pregnant wife in Syria, in order to find them a safe place for the young family to start their lives all over again.

He told Kelli he would need to find a job straight away and work very hard to save the money to get his wife and newborn daughter to Brazil as soon as possible. Kelli has decided to offer him the additional money, allowing them to be back together again as soon as possible, so Mohammed can meet his baby girl.

We’ll be posting future updates of their progress!

Tomorrow morning, Mohammed is flying to Brazil…
