We have chilled with these guys every time we’ve been to the camp so far, and on Wednesday they made us an amazing meal.
They’re pretty entrepreneurial too…9 of them sleep in a shelter they have built from wood and tarpaulin and they have managed to secure a little loan from one of the charities to buy some stock and start a small shop from their home in the camp.
Ultimately friendly and welcoming, these Afghans are actually seeking refugee status in France which can take a very long time. Whilst they are waiting they are unable to work and are therefore forced to live in the jungle, trying to make the situation as manageable as possible for themselves while they wait. 10 months some of them have already been there.
They told me they are desperate to work. ‘If only the French or English spent money on a factory instead of the fences, we would all work in it,’ they told me.
